Pale as Death

  • 1995

Wan and bloodless phantoms move forlorn among the headstones.
Funeral lilies, datura accord, luna moths on cotton flowers, and white clover along a graveyard path.
Wear this conciliatory potion for support in times of sadness. It is particularly helpful through the process of grieving.

Holy grail

Pale as Death is one of my favorite scents, definitely my favorite by Nui Cobalt. I lusted after it when I thought it was discontinued, finally got to try someone else’s, and now get to buy my own! This is all lilies - creamy funeral lilies - plus something creepy and unsettling. Very melancholic. I feel stronger wearing it on difficult days. Like a grief talisman. I love it so much - it’s the ultimate lily for me. I layer it with Coimetrophilia (Love of Cemeteries) for my perfect cemetery scent. But on its own it’s glorious!

Lovely lilies

Lilies are my favorite flower and Pale as Death manages to capture their scent without smelling too clean. It starts off strong, as if I have just buried my face in a full blown bouquet of lilies and taken the deepest breath I’ve taken all day. It’s a fresh, sweet scent with an enchanting nature. Much like the actual flower, there is a subdued powdery smell to this, though it never veers into baby powder territory. I was worried the cotton flowers might give off a fresh laundry vibe, but I can happily report that this doesn’t occur, at least not on my skin. I get a hint of vanilla, perhaps from the white clover, and something slightly aquatic on the dry down. In terms of sillage, this stays pretty close to the skin. Since white florals aren’t everyone’s jam, I actually prefer how delicately this fades.
